It's Thaipusam, probably, a Tamil festival to commemorate when the goddess Parvati gifted Murugan a Vel, or a spear that could vanquish the demon Soorapadman. During the processions, you can see kavadi, ornate structures adorned with metal spikes that pierce their skin and flesh all the way through; some hold up weights via their tongue or cheek. It's supposed to not leave any lasting scars or pain during the trance they are in throughout.
You can read more about it online, I hope all cultures and traditions are known worldwide so we can understand each other better.
Thanks for the comment...I was so happy to run in to this procession...it was a sort of repent that they were showing. In this village, Gingee, they don't understand a word English or any other language...and so no one could give me any ex plaination... They hang by hooks through their skin or they have a piercing through their tongue, or pull trucks...they have to suffer.. I was so excited to walk between these people and they were so happy that a foreigner was taking pictures of them.
Wooow! I haven't noticed they were pierced! It is trully unbelivable what people put themselves through! As if life wasn't hard enough! Thanks for sharing this photo with us. It shows us different cultures and I love to learn about our differences in the world.
